The Seal Project: Immersive VR at the Icelandic Seal Center

How do you bring an aquatic species living beneath the surface directly into a land-based exhibition with absolute depth and realism? That was the core challenge of this immersive 3D 360° virtual reality project created in close collaboration with the Icelandic Seal Center (Selasetur Íslands).

The Experience

Designed to connect visitors with the natural habitat of seals, the project utilizes cutting-edge 360° capture and post-production workflows to place audiences right inside the marine environment. Visitors are given a breathtaking, lifelike perspective of seals in their natural element, offering a modern and engaging addition to the center's permanent exhibitions.

Key Technical Challenges Overcome

  • Stereoscopic 3D Depth in 360°: Achieving true 3D depth across a full 360-degree field of view requires meticulous calibration. Balancing stereoscopic alignment was crucial to deliver a natural, comfortable viewing experience without visual strain.

  • Demanding Environmental Conditions: Filming in coastal and marine environments introduces harsh variables such as unpredictable lighting, water spray, and heavy reflections. Equipment and capture methods had to be finely tuned to maintain pristine, high-resolution visual quality under extreme conditions.

  • Heavy Data Workflows: Processing and editing massive, high-bitrate 3D 360° video pushed rendering and storage systems to their limits. Every link in the pipeline—from high-end capture rigs to final exhibition playback—was optimized to ensure seamless, crystal-clear performance for daily museum visitors.
